Reflecting on the Summer of 2014!

The summer of 2014 will forever be remembered as being the best summer of all time for my family and I! WOW, what an incredible couple of months but I couldn’t have done it without a lot of help and support. While the WongMania system hit some high profile stages/venues, travelled across the country to train elite level pro athletes and certified top level trainers, it has been the overwhelming support for my system that has truly made all the hard work and sacrifice worthwhile. So a big shout out and thanks to my team, clients, participants, the die-hard WongMania crew and of course the leading lady, my wife Tricia. She definitely makes compliance to my system easy with her ability to ensure that our daily macronutrient requirements are met with her phenomenal culinary skills…. those of you who follow me on Instagram/social media understand what I’m referring to with my foodporn pics 🙂 The summer started off with a big bang at the Toronto Fitness Challenge during the Toronto pro supershow at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre . The turnout was incredible but more importantly our efforts were for a great cause. We raised $10,000 for The Sickkids Foundation! A big thanks to my WongMania demonstration team (JP Falacho, Paul Correale, Tania Facer & Angie Lafontaine) who all stepped on stage to lead the way and to Ivan Ho and Tony A from the Fit Factory for including me in this incredible event. WongMania then began an east coast tour, but first a stop in beautiful Quebec City. In between my sessions/seminars we had time to fully take in the sights and appreciate the culture of this historic city. The Citadelle, Chateau Frontenac and the old port are all breathtaking landmarks that must be seen in person to be appreciated. Next stop was Moncton, New Brunswick. This was my first visit to the east coast of Canada and New Brunswick started me off with a great first impression! WongMania was so well received here that I was actually shocked by the turnout and was really impressed by the level of athletes/trainers. Next trip I will allocate more time for this amazing province since we didn’t even have enough free time to visit the famous magnetic hill 🙁 Then to our final destination, Prince Edward Island. All I can say is, if you’ve never visited PEI  you’re missing out huge! This is one of the most beautiful, picturesque and welcoming places I’ve ever been to with amazing people, dining, resorts, golf courses, theme parks and perfect weather for our entire stay. I will admit, however, that the first week in PEI was all business and quite gruelling with some 14 hour days which included elite performance pro athlete training, private training, group training, seminars, WongMania certifications and of course WongMania group sessions. I’m so thankful and overwhelmed by the amount of support I received for my sessions which were all jam packed; big thanks to Regan Rogerson at Adrenaline Athletics Club and Richard Arseneault at Island Impact MMA (who filled the house for my seminar on less than 12 hours notice).   I owe the biggest thanks of all to super trainer Dan Archibald and his lovely wife Kristine for their island hospitality…my kids are still asking when we’re taking you both to the CN tower for dinner 🙂 Dan was instrumental...

Develop Explosive Power, Increase VO2 Max, Lose Weight, Build Lean Mass & Improve Quality of Life

THE WONGMANIA SYSTEM PRE-HAB & CORRECTIVE MOVEMENTS Pre-hab and corrective movements are essential for correcting postural deficiencies from common daily activities such as driving, sitting at a desk and for athletes with muscular imbalances. These movements are essential for injury prevention. Pro-active methodologies lead to longevity. NEUROMUSCULAR ACTIVATION Neuromuscular activation ensures that the participants are fully warmed up with dynamic movements to ensure that the prime movers are firing efficiently to maximize performance. Even this warmup segment feels like an intense workout to most participants. FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT SCREEN The dynamic movement screen consists of a series of challenging functional patterns to ensure that participants are using safe and proper techniques prior to learning progression exercises. Participants will start feeling a serious burn. MARTIAL ARTS EXPLOSIVITY TRAINING The traditional martial arts segment is proven to benefit performance, explosivity, power production and neuromuscular efficiency. This proprietary component is exclusive to the WongMania system and required more than 2 decades to develop from working with world champion martial artists. POWER DEVELOPMENT The power segment of the system pushes the participants to the max by challenging and recruiting the maximum amount of fast twitch muscles while also teaching the body to convert type IIa muscle fibres to fast twitch. METABOLIC CIRCUIT The metabolic circuit is where everything is brought together with strategically designed stations to challenge and improve the VO2 max, explosive power and endurance of the participants – guaranteed to improve the conditioning of even the most elite athletes. OPTIMIZED QUALITY OF LIFE Optimized quality of life is the true benefit of the WongMania system! Every movement within the system is designed to enhance function, decrease injuries and improve quality of life. NUTRITION As an adjunct to the physical and mental training of WongMania, proper nutrition is a must in order to replenish muscle fibres and provide the body with the nutrients to repair. A Different Form of Exercise that Improves Quality of Life

A Different Form of Exercise that Improves Quality of Life

There’s a reason Wongmania is different than any other form of physical exercise or workout and it starts with the start. To ease into the workout, the first part of Wongmania consists of simple twisting and turning and light stretching. This is called activation, which is essentially allowing the synovial fluid, or lubricant between the joints, to start flowing. I would equate it to starting a car and allowing the oil in the engine to circulate before accelerating. Those television ads are true about a car capable of going from zero to 60 kilometers in a few seconds, but it is done while the car is fully in motion or activated, not at the start. Gunning the car before the engine has had time to warm up is going to is going to create damage. The same is true with the body’s ligaments, tendons and muscles. If they aren’t given time to loosen up, it could result in an injury. What I really like about the activation is it allows me to work on my mental conditioning, knowing I will be pushed physically if the workout lasts more than one hour. In the same way you are activating the muscles, it’s important to activate the mind by understanding working out is a challenge that requires total dedication. Sometimes if you allow your mind to wander and not pay attention to the physical task or subtle messages from the brain – such as an unusual sharp pain –this could lead to an injury. When I first started Wongmania, it lasted only an hour. It gradually expanded to two hours, the first half hour consisting solely of activation. In and of itself, Wongmania is a good workout for strength, conditioning and agility. It evolves into more ballistic movement, which is to say high intensity in short spurts that pushes the heart rate. During the entire activation, every muscle in the body endures some form of physical stress, but not to the point of creating an injury if done properly. And this is where I find it’s important to have an instructor such as Steven Wong, who will take the time to emphasize proper technique and positioning. It is functional training to develop core strength without using weights. After half an hour of activation, you should be breathing hard and sweating if you’ve at least challenged yourself. That said, when doing it for the first few times, I think it’s important to understand your limitations and not feel as though you have to match what others are doing, lest you feel inadequate or, for lack of a better word, a wimp. Knowing your body and what you can do when working out is paramount. That’s why the mental aspect is something which can be beneficial. It’s one of the things I’ve learned, particularly with Steven – it is okay to feel a little bit of pain, but to understand when not to push too far beyond that to create an injury. Pain can go away if you learn how to manage it, particularly afterward by using a foam roller to loosen the knots in the muscle groups. Drinking a protein shake or eating a food group with protein – i.e. a chicken breast or fish — within a half hour or so...
